” Love your neighbor as you love yourself. ” Luke 10:27

When a teacher of the law came up asking Jesus, ” What must I do to receive eternal life? ” Jesus answered, ” Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and ” Love your neighbor as you love yourself. This teacher of the law was actually trying to trap Jesus and he wanted to justify himself so he asked, ” Who is my neighbor? ”

Thus Jesus told the story of the good Samaritan. There was a man who was attacked by robbers on his way to Jericho. He was beaten up, half dead by them. It so happened that a priest passing by, saw him yet showed no mercy. Then came a Levite and he was as merciless as the priest without helping him too. They were both God’s chosen servants.

Lastly came along a Samaritan who helped him out by pouring oil and wine on his wounds and bandaged them. Heart filled with pity he even took him to an inn and took care of him. Next day out of great mercy, gave two silver coins to the innkeeper to take care of this man and will make up whatever amount the shortage when he came back.

The story of the ‘ Good Samaritan ‘ had given a full illustration of the love of God to the teacher of the law. He was made to realize, to love your neighbor was to be kind, heart filled with pity to love without condition as God had love us by sending his only begotten son to die on the cross to pay the price of sin.

Where there is love, there is life.
