Jesus answered, ” I saw you when you were under the fig tree-tree before Philip called you. ” John 1:48
Jesus after he had called Andrew and Peter went to Galilee and there he found Philip and called him to follow him. Then Philip after being a follower of Christ found Nathanael telling him that they had found the one whom Moses wrote about in the book of the law and whom the prophet also wrote about. He is the son of Joseph, from Nazareh.
Nathanael was also known as Bartholomew. ” Under the fig-tree ” was his faithfulness to prayer. ” Can anything good come from Nazareth? ” He asked.
Thus Philip invited him to go and see for himself. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, he said about him, ” Here is a real Israelite, nothing is false in him! ” Nathanael asked Jesus, ” How do you know me? He answered, ” I saw you when you were under the fig-tree before Philip called you.
Fig tree was the favorite of all the trees for the people of Palestine and it is a symbol of God’s peace and blessing. Nathanael was a true child of Israel and he was always praying under the fig-tree.
” Teacher ” said Nathanael, ” You are the son of God! You are the king of Israel! ” Jesus said, ” Do you believe just because I told you I saw you when you were under the fig-tree? ”
Like the apostle Thomas, Nathanael believed just because Jesus had proved himself before him. In order to be a true disciple of Jesus, faith and grace have to go along together. It is by grace that spiritual eyes would be opened in encountering with him saying, ” My Lord and my God, I believe. ”
When we feed our faith, we starve our doubts.
