As Jesus was walking along in his hometown, he saw a tax collector, named Matthew, sitting in his office. He said to him, ” Follow me. ” Matthew 9:9

When Jesus saw Matthew sitting in his office, he invited him to follow him. Matthew was also known as Levi. When Jesus called him, ” Follow me ” he got up left everything and followed Jesus.

Then Matthew had a meal at home, and he invited Jesus, his friends, and many tax collectors and other outcasts. Some Pharisees saw this and asked his disciples who were also there, ” Why does your teacher eat with such people? ”

Jesus heard them and answered, ” People who are well do not need a doctor, but only those who are sick. Go and find out what is meant by the scripture that says : It is kindness that I want, not animal sacrifices. I have not come to call respectable people but outcasts. ”

Pope Francis when being interviewed in August 2013 said, he looked at the church as a hospital which is in the battle field to provide aid to the sick and wounded soldiers. The church should be like Jesus to come and look for those who were sick in the heart.

As mentioned by Jesus in the Gospel, he did not come to look for respectable people but outcasts. It was the sick who needed a doctor. Matthew was one of the sick. He was sick at heart because he did not have true friends, being a tax collector. They all disliked him very much.

Matthew is know principally as an evangelist with his Gospel being the first in the New Testament. The image of the winged man is accorded to Matthew because his Gospel begins with the genealogy of Christ.

Choose Jesus, the one who first choose us.
