Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Jesus with great joy. Luke 19:6
Zacchaeus was the only person mentioned in the Gospel who welcomed Jesus with great joy. Joy is the fruit of the Spirit. Joy is at the heart of Christian experience.
Even though Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector, he was treated as dishonest and a public sinner. They all disliked him very much. He did not have true friends so he was lonely and unhappy. He heard of Jesus and he longed for him in his heart. He knew he needed Jesus in his life to be happy.
As Jesus was passing through Jericho, he tried to see who Jesus was, but he was a little man and could not see him because of the crowd. So he ran ahead of the crowd and climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus. When Jesus came to that place, he looked up and saw him. Jesus said to Zacchaeus, ” Hurry down, Zacchaeus, because I must stay in your house today. ” He hurried down and welcomed him with great joy. Love that was in his heart rise to joy while encountering with Jesus. Conversion took place at that very incident. He stood up and said to the Lord, ” Listen, Sir! I will give half my belongings to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will pay back four times as much. ”
Jesus said to him, ” Salvation has come to this house today, for this man also, is a descendant of Abraham. The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. ”
Joy exists where selfishness does not.
