Jesus answered, ” The knowledge about the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. ” Matthew 13:11

Jesus used parables in talking to the people because the secrets of the kingdom of heaven had not been given to them. Though they were listening to Jesus but could not hear the message of God from him. They saw the healing and miracle yet could not see the grace of God at work.

So the prophecy of Isaiah applied to them : This people will listen and listen, but not understand; they will look and look, but not see, because their minds are dull, and they have stopped up their ears and have closed their eyes.

They looked at Jesus as the Son of Joseph and he himself was also a carpenter. They denied the words of Jesus as blasphemy. Otherwise, their eyes would see, their ears would hear. They just could not believe and accept him whom they knew so well as the Savior.

The Chinese proverb: people watch but don’t see, listen but don’t hear, applies to the use of parables too, so that the secrets of the kingdom of heaven would be like rain not going back above but watering the earth and nourishing its plants. The parables were being very down to earth for human understanding.

They were the treasures of Jesus to prepare his people for the kingdom of heaven. Listen then by the grace of God and see in his light with understanding.

To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you.
