A person’s true life is not made up of the things he owns, no matter how rich he may be. Luke 12:15
A man in the crowd asked Jesus to help him to get the property which was left by the father be divided between himself and his brother. Jesus answered him that he was not given the right to do so and he went on and said to them all, ” Watch out and guard yourselves from every kind of greed; because a person’s true life is not made up of the things he owns, no matter how rich he may be. ”
Then he told them this parable : There was once a rich man who had land which bore good crops. He began to think to himself, ” I haven’t anywhere to keep all my crops, I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones to store my corn and all my other goods. ”
He considered himself as a lucky man to have own all these things. Greed said to him to take life easy. He did not have to work and worry anymore from now on, he thought.
But God said to him, ” You fool! This very night you will have to give up your life; then who will get all these things you have kept for yourself? ”
And Jesus concluded, ” This is how it is with those who pile up riches for themselves but are not rich in God’s sight. ” Even though this man was rich but not rich in heavenly realm. God even called him a fool because he did not fear God. He was lack of wisdom to acknowledge that riches had become his God. Building bigger barns had become idol worship and taken up the place of God in his life. He showed no gratitude and had never being thankful at all. He just thought he was lucky to own all these possessions by himself. Ignoring that riches are a blessing from God the almighty to bless others, he was full of pride. In all his life, he failed to understand : What can be seen lasts for a time but what cannot be seen lasts for forever. 2 Corinthians 4:18
