” Well, then, ” Jesus said, ” I do not condemn you either. Go, but do not sin again. ” John 8:11

Jesus came down from Mount of Olives and then he went to the temple. All the people gathered round him, and he sat down and began to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught committing adultery.

” Teacher, ” They said to Jesus, ” This woman was caught in the way act of committing adultery. In our law, Moses commanded that such a woman must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say? ”

They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he bent over and wrote on the ground. They kept on asking him questions waiting for Jesus’ answer. Then he straightened himself up and said to them, ” Whichever one of you has committed no sin may throw the first stone at her. ” He bent over again and wrote on the ground.

As they heard Jesus spoke and saw what he was writing on the ground, they all left, one by one starting from the older ones. Jesus was left alone with the woman only.

He straightened himself up and said to her, ” Well, then, I do not condemn you either. Go, but do not sin again. This woman was thus set free from the accusation put against her because Jesus came not to judge but to set captives free.

In this incident, Jesus had given his wise answer to the crowd no as a judge but as a savior. There was peace in the heart of this woman being caught at the very of committing adultery which could result her death. Jesus freed both the crowd and the woman with his peace and she left realizing her sin and repented. Her life was saved for no being condemned.
