The Lord ordered him, ” Go with all your great strength and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I myself am sending you. ” Judges 6:14
The Lord’s angel appeared to Gideon saying, ” The Lord is with you, brave and mighty man! ” The clan of Gideon was the weakest in the tribe of Manasseh and he was the least important member of his family yet God regarded him as brave and mighty.
God said Gideon could rescue Israel because he would help him. He said, ” You will crush the Midianites as easily as if they were only one man. ” Gideon was fearful and doubted when met with God so he asked for sign as proof. The contrasting experiences of his fleece and the dew gave a double confirmation.
One day Gideon and all his men comped beside the Spring of Harod. The Lord said to him, ” The men you have are too many for me to give them victory over the Midianites. Announce to them, ” Anyone who is afraid should go back home. ” So twenty-two thousand left but ten thousand stayed.
The ten thousand were still too many so he told Gideon to take them down to the water. God would choose who should go for battle. He wanted to choose only those who lapped up water in their hands with their tongues liked dogs to fight.
There were only three hundred men who scooped up water in their hands and lapped it; and the rest were asked to go home. The sentries were spared out in the valley like swarm of locusts. Gideon divided his three hundred men into three groups and gave each a trumpet and a jar with a torch inside it. The trumpets with bright light looked like vast proportions
Just before midnight, with a light and a trumpet in both hands, they blew the trumpets and broke the jars shouted with one voice throwing the enemy army into confusion running away attacking each other with their swords. God who was the heavenly Captain won the battle for Gideon and his men.
Fighting the outrageous battle with God behind him, Gideon preferred ” The things that are not ” as instruments for His triumphs. An army of three hundred men out of ten thousand.
God sees your struggle, talk to him and listen for his direction.
