” Do this and you will live. ” Luke 10:28
A teacher of the Law tried to trap Jesus, asked how to receive eternal life and interpreted the scriptures, ” Love the Lord you God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind ‘; and ‘ Love your neighbor as you love yourself. ‘ ” Jesus replied; you are right, do this and you will live. ”
But the teacher of the Law wanted to justify himself to know his neighbor. Jesus answered him with the parable of the Good Samaritan. He said once there was a man going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, attacked and beaten up by robbers, leaving him half dead. A priest going down that road, saw him and walked on by. He was hurrying to the church to preach about the love of God. In the same way a Levite also came along, looked at the man and did nothing because he was to go to the synagogue to offer sacrifice. Lastly came a Samaritan travelling that way came upon the man and when he saw him, his heart was filled with pity. He poured oil and wine on his wounds and bandaged them. He then took him to an inn taking care of him. The next day he gave two silver coins to the inn keeper to look after the wounded man and he would come back to pay for whatever else the inn keeper spend on him.
To us, in our understanding, our neighbor used to be the one who lives at our right or left. But the teacher of the Law was made to understand that a neighbor is the person who acted kindness.
Jesus replied, ” You go, then an do the same. ” And eternal life is to be merciful as the Lord is merciful.
You cannot love God if you don’t love your neighbor.
