When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, ” My friend, your sins are forgiven. ” Luke 5:20

One day Jesus was teaching and some men brought a paralyzed man who lay on his mat. They tried to enter the house but they couldn’t because of the crowd. So they went up on the roof and removing the tiles, they lowered him in front of Jesus. When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the man, ” My friend, your sins are forgiven. ”

At once the teachers of the law and Pharisees began to wonder about Jesus’ religious claims as a faithful believer respectful of God’s law. This man without studies or title in the midst of common folk could not stand up to them as if he were a teacher. They said Jesus had insulted God and spoken blasphemy. It is only God who can forgive sins. They could not believe, their only recourse was to oppose Jesus who did not pay attention to the authority of the master of the law, who looked down on them.

Jesus knew their thought and in order to let them know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralyzed man, ” Get up, take your mat and go home. ” At once the man stood, took up the mat on which he lay and went home praising God. The power of God was at work to heal the sick and Jesus took advantage of their presence to show that he was not simply a disciple of Moses and the prophets, but he was the master of them all. He was authority incarnate – The word of God made flesh and power given.

There is power in the name of Jesus.
