Jesus answered, ” The first is : Hear, Israel! The Lord, our God, is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your strength. ” Mark 12:29-30
A teacher of the Law came and asked Jesus to know which commandment is the first of all. Jesus answered him by saying, to love God with all our strength. And to love our neighbor as ourselves. There is no commandment greater than these two.
To love God is not a commandment like the others because the commandments of Moses showed specific actions that we should undertake or avoid. On the other hand, when it comes to loving God there is no limit. The commandments of the Bible ( The Ten Commandments of Moses ) merely express in a clear manner the demands of our conscience. Nevertheless, it is necessary to teach this to the children and to unscrupulous persons.
Some people think they are perfect simply because they obey the Ten Commandments. It would be better to say that they only fulfill the minimum requirements or morality stated. Instead of concerning on there commandments which make them feel better about themselves, they should meditate on the First Commandment. All the rest are meaningless if the First Commandment is not understood. And the Commandment to love our neighbor comes second because it cannot be understood or fulfilled without love of God.
We should make an effort to look at our brothers and sisters in the same way that the Father does and those which the Holy Spirit inspires us to do. All the requires that we first know and love God in order to be not far from the kingdom of God.
God has given us two hands, one to receive with and the other to give with.
