Kind words are like a honeycomb : sweet to the spirit and healthy to the body. Proverbs 16:24
The book of proverbs and sayings marked the beginning of wisdom literature in the Bible and is no less word of God than the prophetic books : it is a different type of word throwing a different light on life. The beginning of knowledge is the fear of Yahweh. This is a love full of respect taking God into account and his word as the basis of one’s actions. Words can have life or death consequences which could crush someone’s spirit or through words of wisdom and hope nourish and strengthen others. So Lord, set a guard at my mouth, keep watch at the gate of my lips to speak your words.
Good news from a distant country is like cool water to a day throat as the north wind brings the rain, let wise saying be like incense too, rising to meet God as prayers, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
The proverbs insists on the value of advice, discipline and correction to live a good and godly life. Not to live as one pleases, according to one’s fantasies causes all sorts of misfortune. Give ear to listen to the words of the wise and apply yourself to understand them, because it will be your delight to keep them deep within you, to have them always ready on your lips to answer rightly by knowing the truth as a discerning man of the wise. The wisdom you gain comes from God which is better than great wealth; preferable to silver and gold, to serve others through our speech.
God gave us wisdom to know what must be done and the courage to do it.
