Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Mark 1:17
After John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee and began preaching the Good News of God. He said, ” This is the time of fulfillment; the kingdom of God is at hand. Change your ways and believe the Good News. ” The time of fulfillment was Israel’s long wait while God’s promises were always delayed has come to an end. Jesus affirms that today a new time has begun. The kingdom of God is at hand because we are at threshold. We must take the first steps to enter this new world, a world in which God reigns.
As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net in the lake for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ” Follow me, and I will make you fisher of men. ” At once, they left their nets and followed him. A little farther on, Jesus saw both brothers, James and John mending their nets. Immediately, he called them and they followed him, leaving their father in the boat with the hired men.
Jesus has come to bring us the Good News to reconcile with God. He brings no more laws but only asks us to believe in his words. ‘ Follow me ‘, the first words to his disciples are a call to commit themselves. To follow Jesus, they shared their lot with him, leaving behind their families and work. The immediate responses of Simon, Andrew, James and John were a good example, committing themselves fully to a great work for the kingdom of God. Likewise, we are to do the same to pass on to others in the Church to enter this new world.
Jesus, a friend till the end.
