I have come to call to repentance; I call sinners, not the righteous. Luke 5:32

Jesus went out of the house after saving the paralytic whom his four friends lowered him after removing the tiles from the roof. As he noticed a tax collector named Levi, sitting in the tax-office, he said to him, ” Follow me. ” Levi got up, left everything and began to follow Jesus. Levi was probably the apostle Matthew Mt 9:9. He belonged to a despised group.

Levi gave a feast for Jesus, and many tax collectors came to his house at table with the other people. The Gospel speaks about the publicans or tax collectors, who served the foreign powers. Jesus’ nation was under the domination of the Roman Empire and the tax collectors were Jews who worked for them.

Patriots considered them traitors for they filled their pockets. Even beggars refused to receive from them. Yet Jesus did not condemn them but chose one of them, Levi, as one of his apostles.

Then the Pharisees and their fellow teachers in the party complained to Jesus’ disciples about their master eating and drinking with tax collectors and other sinners.

Jesus heard it and spoke up, ” The doctor is not for the healthy; it is the sick who needs him. I have come to call to repentance; I call sinners, not the righteous. ” Luke 5:31-32. He was commissioned to look for sinners and the lost for a change of life to serve for the kingdom of God. And the kingdom of God : The Church; is a group of sinners, repented and following Jesus, encouraging and supporting one another on the journey of faith towards the heavenly home.

God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.
