‘ Friend, you must come up higher. ‘ Luke 14:10
Jesus then told a parable to the guests, for he had noticed how they tried to take the places of honor. Here Jesus develops a biblical proverb inviting us to be modest in social gatherings. Do not boast before the king or put yourself among the great. It would be better to be invited, ” Come up here, ” Then to be humiliated after having seen the prince ( Proverbs 25:6-7). In doing this he teaches us a new way of life which is fitting for God’s children. We know that what matters is not what is seen : God has called us to work for the community and for him and he knows how to exalt the humble and place them where it best suits him.
Jesus said that we must not choose the best seat when invited to a party for fear that his seat is for someone more important than you. Rather, go to the lower seat, so that your host may come and invite you to take a higher seat. And this will be a great honor for you in the presence of all the other guests. Everyone of us seeks to be near those who are above us since we think we benefit more from being connected with those who are superior than with those who are inferior.
In every social gathering, the first places are the places of honor. They are meant for important persons who are rich, famous, reputable and with status in the eyes of man but might not be the same in God. We all share in the guilt when we decide with whom it is more beneficial to be associated. Man always looks at the outside where-as God sees the inside through the heart. Therefore be humble and be made great to receive honor from man and better still from God the almighty.
Being humble is being loved by human and God.
