Out of him shall flow rivers of living water. John 7:38
On the last and greatest day of the feast, the Jewish feast of the Tents, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, ” If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me; and let him who believes in me drink, for the scripture says : Out of him shall flow rivers of living water. ” Jesus was referring to the Spirit which those who believe in him were to receive; the Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.
The Spirit of God fills the universe (Wisdom 1:7). Actually God never ceased communication himself. His Spirit slips into man’s spirit whom he awakens but the Spirit is not poured out like water. The Spirit of God becomes one with the Spirit of the one who receives him. Only after Jesus had entered into his Glory, could he give his Spirit to those who should unite with him.
Spirit had not been given because Jesus was in the world which many manuscripts read : There was no Spirit. The Spirit is ” Communication of God dispensed ” to all creatures through all times. He is somehow able to divide himself, dwelling in each creatures with different gifts; then he brings them back to unity in God.
Jesus promised to give living water and it is a Gift of God! Jesus proclaimed, ” If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me; and let him who believes in me drink. ” Out of him shall flow rivers of living water as referred by Jesus for the water he gives will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
Anyone who believes has eternal life.
