Instead I call you friends since I have made known to you everything I learned from my Father. John 15:15

The Law of Greek treats servants as instruments of work. A servant does not have the dignity of a person, he is just an instrument. An instrument is always to be used. It is just for the use of others.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus repeats his commandment of love; you are my friends if you do what I command you : love one another as I have loved you. Faith works through love. Faith is active along with deeds, deeds inspired by love in practice.

Jesus would not call us servants anymore, because a servant does not know what his master is about. Instead he calls us friends since he has made known to us everything he learned from the Father. Friend is to love, to understand, to share, to encourage and to communicate with one another. These are signs in living out Jesus’ commandment of love in daily life.

Think of Abraham, our Father of faith who was justified by him act of offering his son, Isaac on the altar. The word of scripture was thus fulfilled and he was called the friend of God.

Christ asks us to first share his thinking : that is what the expression – keep my commandments mean. Thus we become his friends knowing his as a person who loves us and acts in us. Then we will produce the authentic fruit of love, whose source is Christ. By the fruit of love, people know that we belong to him, his friends.

A good friend has lived along with you.
