I will speak in parables, I will talk of old mysteries which we have heard and known. Psalm 78:2
Jesus used to talk to the crowds by means of parables, because they look and yet do not see; they hear, but they do not listen or understand. In them the words of the porphet Isaiah come true : Much as you hear, you do not understand; much as you see, you do not perceive.
The parable of the treasure and the pearl invite us to to let opportunities pass by when the kingdom of God comes to us. It is like a treasure hidden in a field. The man who finds it buries it again and then sells everything he has an buy that field. Again the kingdom of Heaven is like a trader who is looking for fine pearls. Once he has found it of exceptional quality, he sells everything he has and buy it.
Some had been waiting for a long period of time for that word, a person or a sign of hope : the treasure that would give new meaning to their lives. One day when they have found it : a forgiving word or a commitment offered to them. They recognized that this is the way for what they have been waiting and thus entered the invitation happily.
The pearl in some sense is Christ himself. Those who enter the religious life are aimed at meeting hi again and possessing him definitely by entering the kingdom divesting themselves of all those habits, greed and pleasure that occupy our hearts.
Whatever you are, be a good one.
